Homework Scanner ("the app") is operated by Fenglin Yuan. This policy describes what information the app collects and how it's used.
Teachers create an account with an email address and password. Passwords are stored as salted bcrypt hashes — we never store or have access to your plaintext password.
Students do not create accounts. Each device is identified by a random ID generated on that device, with no name, email, or other personal information attached. Students join a class using a join code their teacher shares.
When you scan a homework or test page, the photo is sent to our backend and processed by a vision-language AI model (Alibaba Cloud's Qwen, via Alibaba Cloud DashScope) to extract the questions and handwritten answers on the page. The extracted text (not the original photo) is what gets saved as part of an assignment or a graded submission. By default, a student's answer text is graded on-device and only the resulting score is sent to our server — full answer text is only stored if a student explicitly chooses to share their results with their teacher.
Scanned images are sent to Alibaba Cloud's DashScope AI service for text extraction. No data is sold or shared with advertisers, and the app contains no third-party analytics or ad trackers.
Teachers can permanently delete their account and everything they own (assignments, classes) at any time from within the app: Settings → Delete Account. This immediately and permanently removes that data — it is not recoverable. You can also request deletion by contacting us at the email below.
